    Default A bit of schoolwork

Not really good at naming threads, but anyhow...about two weeks ago we had our final assignment in a course called "Music, Theory and practice"...roughly translated. The assignment was to compose music to a clip from a movie called "Hotel". The clip had no sound or music, so we had to add everything ourselves.

During our Christmas Holiday we were to write down our music onto a note sheet, and then have a string quartet perform our musical piece in the schools studio, where we recorded it all and then added it to the movie. We had 20m to introduce ourselves to the quartet, hand out the papers and instruct them to how they were supposed to play our music. Those 20 minutes went by pretty fast, so we didn't really get a top quality recording, but since we only had 20 minutes we had to make the best of it.

Anyway, here's the result. The piece is composed by me and two classmates. The story is that a king is locked inside his castle, and is very, very troubled by this. But as the time passes he begins to brighten up, and become more optimistic.
Note that the story is the story behind the musical piece, not the movie itself.

Now, here's the result. I'm really tired, so if something sounds really weird in my writing...I'll fix it later on! Enjoy

Because I'm not a professional at writing music!
Also, I think a whole orchestra would be needed if this was to be put in a movie. Me and my friends had a hard time just making this part, imagine the work of composing for a whole orchestra! D:

Oh, and thanks ToH! Almost forgot to thank you D:

Nice work Deetox! I would love to watch/listen to this composition with the movie as the video! Please upload it with the movie!

Hey I had a similar project when I was in Grade 6! Only that, it wasn't serious or as well done as this.

The soundless clip we did it on depicts a scared woman running in some woods. It is shot in black and white. She trips over a black bag, opens it up and discovers her own corpse in there.

Have you heard of this clip just wondering?

No I have not heard of that clip. Sounds interesting though! :o

I uploaded it to youtube, so now you can watch it all to the movie. All the sounddesign and placement for drones is made by me, and I'm not a sounddesigner, so I've downloaded many sounds from freesounds.org. The drones come from a free plug by native instruments.

When we were editing the video we had a bit of problem fitting the music to the movie, but the teachers liked it very much...so I guess we did a good job anyway ^^

That was really well done, especially considering you made it up in 20 minutes, the pizzicato's in the beginning were a nice touch.
    Great work.

    Great work.
I'm probably misunderstanding what you wrote, but we did the recording in 20 minutes. The whole process of writing what the quartet was supposed to play took about two days of constant work ^^

Sorry, I'm still a total noob at using the featuring tool. I think it should show up on the front page soon!

On the front page there's "Featured Forum Media". Basically anything created in Showoff that we think is worth pointing some extra attention to will be put there. The only reason you music had not landed there yet is because mods are still getting used to the additional stuff we can do, and Oscar isn't around at the moment.

    Beautiful.
Loved just listening to the piece on its own.
Watching the clip from Hotel, I was have expecting Slenderman to appear at 4:40.
Sort of had a feel, like Fringe.

Fucking fantastic work of music. I love the dynamics. The strings players really showed great emotion through technique.

    Very good bro
