    Default Need Name Ideas

Some of you may remember me posting about a game a while ago called Arena. Well... the name is no longer valid, the whole concept of the game has been redesigned and now we need a new name, which we are having trouble with. I thought that since this game is going to be public, I would ask the public what kind of name would attract them to the game.

The basics about the game are as follows:

A 2D, cartoon(ish), bloody, open world, adventure, MMORPG, platformer which is based in a fantasy medieval era. It has a strong and cinematic story (Which I cannot give away). Those are just the BARE BARE BARE basics about it. Hopefully it gives you enough to maybe get some names flowing

Because it sounds so epic like, be sure to include "th" in the end on the name.

Shadowtime, that sounds cool, but maybe not for this game

    The Old Papyrus: Arena

That's my suggestion. Don't mind the wiki article I linked.

If the story is so strong, don't you think the name should revolve around that instead of around some random suggestions from the internet?

I agree with this. It would also help us name it if we knew more of the specifics - the general who/what/when/where/why of the story.

One reason I'm not using that name is because of that. The game is also a completely different art style and concept. The main reason I'm not calling it Arena anymore is because it is not based around arena battles which the original idea was.

The game will expand and update over time, adding more to or changing the story. I'm looking for more of a name for the world that the players explore, something that isn't really english, I tried looking at some latin names, but I couldn't find any I liked. The name of the world is most likely going to be the name of the game.

Maplestory has a comparable concept to this game. It's definitely not copying Maplestory, but the concept is similar.

And thank you BlueLily I will take those into consideration.

I would take english words and modifying their syntax and/or spelling. It works when I'm trying to think of new names for things.

We have no idea what the visuals are, we have no idea what direction this is, there is no clear way for us to give you a good name suggestion so I don't get why you're even asking in here.

We NEED the plot to name a game. What do you think people base the name of games on, the graphics level? Sandbox elements? What year it is?

Plot is needed otherwise you get games with names like Darkrider where you don't have any idea in hell what the name has to do with anything.

I agree with KT. At the moment because everything is so vague the only thing that can really be offered is either made up medieval sounding words (e.g. Pandoratrix) or cliched medieval titles (e.g. Legend of the Dark Crypt).

If you had some story specifics, which you wouldn't need to tell us, you could just use this for yourself, it could give you a better platform. For example, if your main character was simply doing a hero's journey because of bloodline or destiny in a specific world you could name it after his name/prophecy/etc and have something like The Elder Scrolls, Legacy of Kain, World of Warcraft, etc.

    Skyrim?
    Max Payne?
    L.A. Noire?

    I dont get your point.

But if I‘d like to see some character and level designs, otherwise I don't think I‘d be a big help.

There is no game called Darkrider, but with that said all the examples you mentioned, Tobu, are related to the plot. Either by location or character.

Generate some names and see if you like any of them. Also I don't think that plot is really needed to name the game, or at least in some cases. He's just looking for a random name to name the land of the game.

Skyrim is the name of the land, as Morrowind, Daggerfall, etc. are. Oblivion is their special hell, though.
Max Payne is the freakin' main character.
L.A. Noire is a typical noire detective set in L.A.

All those names are based on the story elements. Really. Pretty much every game name is based on the core elements - names or gameplay elements, mostly. (E.g. Portal, Team Fortress, Driver, Battlefield)

The first suggestion gave me "phycali". I guess that the name generator is not exactly friendly.

What I meant wasn't that we need to know much about the plot, at least it doesn't have to be in details.

“This is an rpg game, it‘s the fifth installment in the Elder Scrolls series.
You play in the land of Skyrim“

I don't know, but I wouldn't call that a plot, but it‘s enough to come up with a name.

Xiox said he wanted the name to ve related to the location of the game. But he haven't told us that name ao I guess he haven't found a name for the location yet.

Yeah, because Skyrim is the location in which the plot takes place, and the Elder Scrolls are iconic key elements of the plot which every single game in the series revolves around. It's a setting, both as a geographical location and within lore and it's a fuck-ton more information than you've given us about your project. In fact, so far, every single "example" is proving our point against you, in that we need to know SOMETHING about the game in order to help unless you want generic titles that have nothing to do with the game and your alleged "strong and cinematic story."

Now stop whining and tell us more about your project or just use generic title generator off Google.

I meant DarkSider (Darkrider might have actually made sense for that game actually more then the name they did pick), but meh, my point was indirectly made.

edit: Here is a idea of a name. Nihil Scio = I know nothing.

What? The plot is about you being a “dragon-born“
The title doesn't tell you anything about the plot.
Sure it‘s where the plot takes place but still, you don't need a shitload of info to come up with a name like that.

If Xiox‘s game takes place in... I dunno... Xioxland? Then that's all we need.

Of course that's kinda cheesy, but it works.
    EDIT:
    I don't know. Maybe you're right.
Some games/movies just seem to be randomly titled.

Rockstar games said they sometimes just put random names on the game cases.
They don't really care about the front cover.
