Default Slender Man & Other Online Horror

The more perceptive among you might realize that this is my first post in a while. You might be wondering, "Gee whiz, Rabbi, where've ya been all this time?" Well, the answer is simple: I've been captured by The Slender Man. Well, symbolically, at least.

At least some of you are probably aware of ol' Slendy, but for those of you who aren't, he's a creature that spawned from Something Awful's "Create Paranormal Images" thread, which was originally created to troll 4chan's /x/ board. From a distance, The Slender Man just looks like a man in a business suit. However, upon closer inspection, one realizes his abnormal height and lack of a face. He's also said to have multiple black tentacles that sprout from his back, though sometimes they're in place of his arms. His usual prey are children, whom he kills by turning them into mist.

His Modus Operandi seems to be stalking people from a distance, and driving them insane before finally killing them. Sometimes, he'll have human minions that he's captured and brainwashed, and they'll aid in the aforementioned driving insane of the victim.

One other interesting thing to note: People who are being tormented by The Slender Man have the strange compulsion to write about their experiences or carry a camera around with them to document the strange things that happen during their lives. Hence, many Slender Man blogs and video series have been made. Most of the video series are Alternate Reality Games, where the characters in the videos will have, say, Twitter or Formspring accounts, where fans can ask the characters questions.

The trope codifier for Slender Man blogs was Just Another Fool (http://jafool.wordpress.com/2009/07/...-what-happens/), and likewise for video series was Marble Hornets (http://www.youtube.com/user/marbleho...54/Wmhfn3mgWUI).

I highly recommend both of these series, as well as any other Slendy series you can find. Fair warning, though: these series are pretty damn creepy. You'll never look at windows, or guys in suits, the same way ever again.

Hey Rabbi. Glad to have you back on board again (with a new avatar, I can see!).

So the reason you've been gone is that you've been fascinated by this Slender Man concept?

Well, partly. The other reason is that I didn't have a computer for a few months, and when I got a new computer, I sort of forgot about DQ. I recently started to remember about Castle, and then about DQ. So, I came back.

well, glad to have you back.
I don't like the fact that you brought up the creepy stuff though, I get fascinated by that way too easy.

I can attest to that being afraid of windows. My house has many windows, including in the bathroom, and I do not feel good.

No need to be afraid, children. I'm only here to give you candy.

Same as Rimmy, here. It's also really weird to listen to that kinda stuff while listening to this song.

I think you meant figuratively. Otherwise, I'd love to hear what Slender Man is symbolical of. Let me take a stab at it; you're being stalked by a crippling, nagging paranoia that you're a woman trapped in a man's body? That would be some juicy symbolism.

Well, I was forcibly taken away from the site without wanting to. Symbolically, I was captured from the small town that is DQ, and taken to the Slender Man's forest, which could represent the wilderness that is real life, or the wilderness that is the rest of the internet. Then I forgot about the site for a bit, so that could be symbolized by the Slender Man's tendency to screw with people's memories. All in all, I'd say my semantic screw-up is actually my subconscious influencing my grammar.

"Help me, The Slenderman's got me!"

But in all seriousness, good to have you back, person who I am not very familiar with.

Warning: If you ever see anything titled "Squidward's Suicide," DO NOT look at it. Seriously, it fucks you up. The weekend after I read it, I was trapped in a fear-induced fugue state, during which I was afraid to be anywhere by myself. This was two weeks ago. Only earlier today was I able to muster up the courage to take a freaking shower. My friends who have read it have had similar experiences. I know it's tempting to look it up now that I've told you about it, but seriously, for your own good, do not read Squidward's Suicide. Not joking. Don't read it. Stay far away. Very far. Okay? Good.

Dude Rabbi you're not watching enough physical and psychological torture videos. Once you see how terrible stuff can be without magic, the creepypasta world won't seem so crazy anymore.

Creepypasta sure is fascinating, don't you think? I remember, i found the Zalgo concept very interesting, even though its very unbelievable. But things that really flip you out are the ones that are based on real life.

Creepy pastas is cozy evening entertainment to me. If it prevents you from living a normal life perhaps you shouldn't take it up as a hobby.
