There are various theories on what had happened to Etrius, the most common is that he is still alive.

No one knows what happened to Etrius my friend, we can only specculate upon what happened.
But, think about. There are only two thinkable options. He survived because of the ancient powers he was gaining, or an evil dragged him off and ate him.
I doubt that Oscar would give atention to the altar, if an evil just dragged him off to eat him, as it would have no relevance to the story. So, I think he's alive, and it was letting you know he survived.
